[Nathaniel Lyon]

The last political writings of gen. Nathaniel Lyon, U.S.A. with a sketch of his life and military services

Rudd & Carleton, New York. 1861, 275p., tissue-guarded frontis portrait (steel-engraved), first edition black cloth boards titled gilt and panelled blind. Badly edgeworn casing; head and tail are missing quarter-inch strips of cloth rim, upper joint begun to split, turned corner tips, cardstock exposed along edges, discolorations from handling; textblock and hinges are sound, with mild scattered foxing, a better than reading copy. Anti-slavery, pro-democracy essays. The hundred or so prefatory pages inform us, paradoxically, that the man was also an enthusiastic Indian killer; Lyon spent several years in California relentlessly surpressing the native population. P.22: "He was finally removed from California, which we will suppose became in time so far free from Indians, as no longer to need his services"
