Bell, John T.

Civil war stories; compiled from official records --union and confederate

The Whitaker and Ray Company (Incorporated), San Francisco. 1903, 189p., publisher's ad leaf (instructive in inself), first edition thus in grey cloth boards decorated with thematic cannon imagery, quite soiled and rubbed. Hinges a little weak. Compiled from "the one hundred and thirty volumes of War Records, union and confederate." Last episode, "Prison days of Jefferson Davis," concludes with the following Westian (Nathaniel West) uplift penned by Bell, an Oakland resident: "It was a war planned from the beginning by the Almighty and fought by American pluck and endurance to its appointed end"
