Uncle John's stories for good California children [title page] / The first California story book for the holidays [cover title]

California History Center & James Silverman, children's book historian, Cupertino. 1988, Facsimile reproduction: 64p., three vignette pix in repro, [2]p. ads in facsimile, 5x3.5 inch perfectbound squareback in glossy white wraps printed red and gilt, a very good copy. First issued in San Francisco by publisher Hutchings & Rosenfield [per title page], alternately "Published by A. Rosenfield" [cover statement]. Find an ad within for A. Roman & Co's "juvenile books." Original issue evidently thought to be 1860, this handwritten in brackets with query mark on the title page of the surviving copy Jim Silverman supplied to the photocopiers. Darn little to do with California; in the first story German immigrant boy Fritz makes it to Sacramento with his violin. Second story set in France, kid fights wolf. "The Maniac Mother and Child Angel" describes a catatonic woman whose kids burned to death, madhouse setting, no location. Other stories take place in China, in Java, in Germany, at sea
