Steiger, New York. 1871, [iv], 136, [36p.], sixteen monochrome plates showing geometrical shapes on graph paper, first edition in worn red cloth boards, frayed spine ends, back cover shows long-ago damp damage with loss of sizing, but not musty; ex library; hinges are cracking but not yet loosened. Includes children's songs with music. Douai, 1819-1888, was one of the few German-American Marxists of the 1848 generation to remain active in the Socialist movement. Douai first emigrated to Texas were he established an antislavery newspaper, The San Antonio Zeitung, he was later driven out of Texas because of his abolitionist politics. He was also an early advocate of kindergartens, and wrote probably the earliest fiction by an American Marxist, Fata Morgana, deutsch-amerikane Preis-Novelle, published in 1858
