Kyoto Shinbunsha, Kyoto. 1993, 111p., text in Japanese, very good trade paperback in wraps; Endorsed by the governor of Kyoto prefecture, the book aims to provide a "prescription for AIDS" to the people of Kyoto. It begins by introducing the cases of several individuals and how they got HIV, urging readers to learn more about AIDS and overcome their ignorance and false sense of security. At the same time, the book is critical of the irrational AIDS panic that gripped Japan in the very early stages of the epidemic. Structured as a series of questions and answers, the book treats topics such as what happens when one gets HIV, how AIDS is transmitted, how sterilization should be carried out, and other basic facts. It also has a brief chapter imagining the future of AIDS, and then a substantial chapter on specific recommendations for Kyoto - from sex education to testing to developing institutions to support HIV+ people.
