Nekrasov, Vadim

The roots of European security, 40 years after the Yalta and Potsdam conferences (1945). Translated from the Russian by Gulhammid Sobratee

Novosti Press Agency Publishing House, Moscow. 1984, Not least a revisionist interpretation of US professed aims. Opening chapter is titled "Operation Argonaut," Yalta in Allied military code. From pp. 47-8: "As we all know, the Americans dropped atom bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. Official Washington claimed that the bombings were aimed at bringing the end of the war nearer and avoiding unnecessary bloodshed and casualties. But, as we have seen, they had entirely different objectives. Neither strategy nor tactitics required the use of the atom bomb. The purpose of the bombings was to intimidate other states"
