Eleanor Roosevelt took a leading role in the establishment of Arthurdale and it was one of her major priorities. The New Deal administration built houses, schools and public buildings in the community and helped organize educational actives for the resettled coal miners in this back-to-the-land and self-sufficiency effort. The federal government liquidated its holdings in Arthurdale in 1947 and private ownership replaced it. It now exists as a historic site
