Each a mighty voice, a century of speeches from The commonwealth club of California. Foreword by Kevin Starr, afterword by Gloria C. Duffy

the club / Heyday Books, San Francisco / Berkeley. 2004, xxxi, 487p., photo section with uncommon press photography, first edition cloth boards in glossy dj, near new. Political and activist celebrities of almost every stripe, and not all of whom are European-American males. Find Martin Luther King Jr. and some local talent like Maxine Hong Kingston, Ron Dellums, Shirley Chisholm. The King portion is Vietnam-related, there is a twopage editor's introduction, a two and a half-page excerpt from King's address, and two pages from the question-and-answer session. The two quoted questioners (possibly typical of this audience) are hostile : "Vietnam is totally unrelated to the Negro dilemma," and "Are you aware that pulling out of Vietnam is tantamount to surrender"); King fields these with ease
