The African American minister became an advocate for the black South in the era when Jim Crow institutionalized American racism. His novels, including The Hindered Hand, posit blacks who are heroes in the face of adversity. After abandoning fiction, he became an important figure in the National Baptist Convention, eventually becoming president of the American Baptist Theological Seminary.
