Schrieke, a Dutch scholar and resident of the Dutch East Indies, was hired by the Rosenwald Fund to make a study of African American life and education, concentrating on the South. He considers both the status of immigrants from the point of view of divisions within immigrant groups as well as larger social prejudices, with chapters on the Chinese and Japanese in California, Mexicans, Indians, and Filipinos, along with three chapters focused primarily on African Americans
